He was born March 20, 1937 in Minneapolis, MN to Helen Hanstad and Victor Anderson. Stu attended Johnson High School in St. Paul, MN where he met his future wife Joan Amundson. He graduated with the class of 1955 and played on their state championship hockey team his senior year. Following high school graduation, he earned a scholarship to play hockey at the University of MN and earned his bachelor’s degree in education.
On September 8, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life Joan in St. Paul, MN. In 1964 they made a new residence in Oconto Falls where Stu taught physical education and established the boy’s high school golf program. He finished his career coaching both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams. In 2000, the Wisconsin High School Golf Coaches Association inducted him into their golf coaching Hall of Fame. As a longtime member of River Island Golf Club in Oconto Falls, he served many years on the board, as the men’s league organizer and could be regularly seen practicing golf, even though “He never hit a shot he liked!” As a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls he served on the church council, call committee, as a Sunday teacher and usher, and ministered to homebound parish members.
